Dear Hattie,

I don’t know where to begin.  Arianne and Bennett’s wedding at The Riverhouse was the most amazing celebration for all of our family and friends who attended.  It was perfect.

Your bridal suite, with fruit, cheese and champagne, made us feel we were in our home relaxing before a big day.

The ceremony site, and cocktail hour on the back deck was beautiful.  Everyone is still talking about the food.  I have never been to a wedding where the food was like we were dining at a five star restaurant.  No other place compares.

Your staff was very attentive as well, and Kelley Schwarm was exceptional.  She made everything easy for a somewhat anxious mother of bride and bride.

I cannot  thank you all enough for making our daughters very special day  a very successful one on many levels.  We are forever grateful.

Dear Jim,

Our wedding at The Riverhouse on Friday, May 17, 2013 was magical.

When we met you on a dreary and freezing cold afternoon in December we could never imagine that just 5 months later your team would execute the most amazing day of our lives without so much as a minor glitch.

From the moment we walked into The Riverhouse for the first time we felt comfortable. You were fantastic in describing the property, the services and what we could expect. Once I began working with Hattie things just continued to get better. She answered every question I had quickly and in a professional and knowledgeable manner. Throughout the process I greatly appreciated the flexibility offered to us with regards to menu, place settings, ballroom set-up and so forth. Hattie kept meticulous notes on each of our discussions and every decision I made. This was evident when we met for our final meeting and every expectation I had was repeated back to me with precision. I had every confidence in her capabilities from the start.

On the afternoon of the wedding when I arrived with my bridesmaids, we loved the Bridal Suite so much! The set-up makes it easy for many girls to primp for the big day. The Banquet Managers, Kelley and Mary were there for us with whatever we needed. Their calm and controlled demeanor was so welcoming. I cannot thank them enough for wrangling up guests and ensuring, as planned, I would walk down the aisle not a second after 6pm!

We had the pleasure of meeting Leah at our tasting and were thrilled when we learned she would be our attendant for the evening. Everyone told us we would never eat or drink a thing the day of our wedding, well, Leah made sure we did! She was right there to attend to our every need with a smile and a mission to get it done.

Further, my parents were extremely impressed with the way the staff accommodated our family overall. My Mom may become the best word-of-mouth marketer you ever have! There is simply no better service, atmosphere, food, or value anywhere in this area. Our guests are still talking about it, especially friends of my parents with children who have recently been married at other venues and were left disappointed by something.

I could go on forever, but what resonates the most is that your staff made us feel special. No one ever acted like they were “working” and this was just another wedding to churn out. Each and every person presented themselves like they were friends and this day was as important to them as it was to us. We will always, always, remember that.

We commend your staff, especially those we had the pleasure of working closely with, including Hattie, Kelley, Mary, and Leah. They are gems, treat them well! As local Haddam residents, we wish each of you continued success and send our sincerest thanks for everyone’s hard work!

From start to finish, the experience was outstanding and better than expected. Kelly was so easy to work with and even forgiving on my delay in responding to her requests. On the night in question the staff helped set up our baskets, centerpieces and could not do enouugh to help. The “walking” staff was great with their approach to serving the appetizers, etc and the meal was on time, great and everyone raved about the food! And thank you again the great weather. We will likely reach out to you again next year.

I just wanted to let you know how wonderful our event was today. Everything was just beautiful, from the floral arrangement on the table in the foyer, to the candles on the dining tables and the layout of the food stations. And the food was absolutely delicious!

Jake was incredibly helpful throughout the entire event, and every single member of the staff was attentive and delightful. Honestly, we could not have asked for more.

We are so pleased to have been able to have this event at The Riverhouse, and I want to thank you for all that you did to make it happen. This will be a very special memory for Ira for many years to come.

Mr. Jim Bucko:

My wife and I recently held our daughter Heather’s wedding at the Riverhouse. We spent many weekends looking at different venues to hold her wedding. Heather seemed to feel that there was something missing at each locale. We were driving by the Riverhouse and noticed the sign. We stopped by unannounced and were greeted by Libby Rutty. She gave us a tour and Heather loved everything. We made an appointment to come back and discuss dates and prices, etc.

We met with Libby and picked our date, June 11th. We discussed a few other details and left feeling very good about our choice. Shortly after we left there we had a few questions. We emailed Libby and received a prompt and thorough response. We attended a wedding show and received lots more information. Libby was a great help for us making suggestions and offering us help with any questions and concerns.

We then attended the tasting. So delicious and so many options. We made our appetizer and dinner choices that evening. We also chose our linens.

Next came the final meeting with Libby and Matt. We were very impressed with their professionalism and the attention to detail. We gave our older daughter Elizabeth a wedding on June 19 of last year at [name omitted] . It was also very beautiful but we had to attend to the small details. We did not need to concern ourselves with any of this at Heather & Tim’s wedding.

On the day of the wedding we were very relaxed knowing that Libby and Matt would be there to take care of everything. From the champagne and snacks in the bridal suite to the candy bar at the end of the evening, everything was all we expected and more. The food was magnificent. Many of our guests told us how much they enjoyed the meal.

We just wanted to say thank you to your magnificent staff for the most memorable event for our daughter and new son in law.

On Thursday, May 13th 2010, we held our 8th annual National Loss Prevention Conference at The Riverhouse. I heard many comments that this Vendor Dinner was the best in 8 years – the quality of food and the presentation was beyond my expectations. The food was reasonably priced for this event and all suggestions as far as the menu went were right on target with what my group expects. The quality, quantity and delivery were exceptional!

Kelley Smith was a joy to work with – professional and courteous and so helpful with suggestions including the menu, the table linens and the setup of the room. She made it easy and asked me every relevant question and walked me through the process every step of the way. Everything was as it was stated it would be. There was not one thing that was not discussed with me or not delivered.

The Riverhouse is a beautiful property and the atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for when planning this event – although elegant, it was stressed that this was a casual event – so we had a casual event in a beautiful setting – could not have asked for a more dressed up, casual event – it was beautiful. My attendees were in awe of the surroundings and the outside decks and just felt like we treated them like Kings and Queens – they all loved the property.

The staff was amazing – from Kelley to Matt and all of the servers that were on that evening. I was pleased with the service and the food presentation, and all of my guests were as well. I did not receive one complaint – everything went so smoothly!

Thank you for making the entire planning process easy and the evening beautiful – I sincerely appreciate all of you and the work that you do – it’s not easy pleasing 142 people at the same time but I believe we all pulled it off! Kudos to Kelley and the staff at the Riverhouse – I hope to work with you again in the future.

To everyone at The Riverhouse:

This is the first time since Lauren and John’s wedding that I have had a chance to pause and I wanted to thank you for your significant contribution to making the day a success. It is so unusual today that someone delivers “as promised” and you did that wonderfully. You and your staff made everyone instantly comfortable and that just set the tone for a wonderful evening. You made sure you found Pat Gehrig even though she came a little late and made sure she had as much to enjoy as all of us without celiac.

I got numerous comments on how special the bartender in the dance room was. They tell me she greeted each person and made them feel special. Even the tipping was handled exactly as I wanted it. When people really wanted to tip they could do so but it was moved out of sight so no one felt an obligation to do so.

And of course the food was excellent. Everyone who mentioned it to me loved it and especially liked the fish which we had chosen based on your recommendation. And all that was after “the best hors d’oeuvres ever” according to most of my guests (including me). I enjoyed everything I ate.

It was a wonderful night and Barbara and I do very much appreciate all your work as well as the work of your staff.

I just got the survey and will try to get that out as well but did not want to hold up on the “thanks.”


To Jim, Libby, Ivy and other Riverhouse staff,

When Carol and I fIrst walked into The Riverhouse, we knew it was the place we wanted for our wedding. The energy of The Riverhouse was very inviting and as we entered, Carol and I looked at each other and smiled the kind of smile that simply said, “I think this is the place.” It just felt like the right place from the beginning.

When we met with Jim that day, we did not know at that point whether or not we would in our law suit allowing same sex couples to marry but Jim, with his welcoming smile, took the time to talk with us anyway. We ended that meeting hoping our
33 year dream to marry would be real ized at the Riverhouse and we are very. very happy that it was. Thank- you Jim for welcoming us and assuring us that you could accommodate the possibility of putting on a wedding with very little notice if necessary. When the court decision was announced, your e-mail of support and congratulations was very much appreciated.
We would especially like to thank Libby whose calm and friendly manner assured us that everything would go smoothly. Her guidance and helpful suggestions were also much appreciated.

We also appreciated Ivy’s gentle way of keeping us on track at the wedding rehearsal and on the day of the wedding – and want to thank her for remembering to tum off the blow·ers to the heating system during our ceremony! Because of Libby and Ivy. we really didn’t have to worry about anything before or on our wedding day. The Riverhouse is lucky to have you both.

There were many reasons we chose The Riverhouse: if s location, the layout of the building itself which increased our options of where to have the ceremony because it was January and an outside ceremony was not an option, the beauty and energy of the building itself and the positive comments we were beginning to hear from other people about the food and the excellent staff. But the day itselfwas simply perfect and even beyond what we could have imagined.

From the comments we have heard from our guests who are still talking about our wedding two months later, we have heard that the food was better than they have had at any wedding they had ever attend~ the wait staff was friendly and somehow able to serve everything perfectly without being intrusive and the Riverhouse itself was absolutely beautiful.

Carol’s brother-in-law has been in the restaurant business for 30 years and said that if we were given a survey to fill out – “we better give everything a ten”. He had never been to a place as perfect in every way as The Riverhouse.

As you know, we are not the youngest couple to ever get married and most of our guests reflected our age so they have attended many weddings over the years. Everyone we have talked to said they would recommend The Riverhouse to anyone they knew who was looking for a place to get married. You can be assured that Carol and I will do the same.

I think you know how much our wedding day meant to us. (And yes, Libby – the tears are starting to flow in the remembering
of it). We had waited a very long time and had worked hard to make marriage possible for same sex couples in Connecticut. Thank you for your acceptance and your support tor our love and for making our wedding a day we will never forget.

I think one of the nicest compliments we received was actually from the wait staff who approached us at the end of the evening to say that our wedding was the most touching and romantic wedding they had ever served. They may have been referring to the love that Carol and I continue to hold for each other after all these years or the music which set the mood or the friendly guests who were happily sharing in a wedding day that they too had waited to celebrate for a long time.

But I think part of the romantic feeling came from The Riverhouse itself as it took on and reflected the love that Carol and I have carried in our hearts for 33 years – in it’s warmth, in it’s brrace, in it’s richness and in it’s commitment to please, honor and serve – The Riverhouse has no equal.

We would like to think that the energy of our love is now a part ofthe Riverhouse so that when the next couple comes through its doors they will feel what we felt and will honor their love for each other by getting married at The Riverhouse at Goodspeed Station.They will be so glad they did. Our compliments to the chef: all the kitchen and wait stafr Jim, Libby and Ivy for making our wedding a day we will always remember as one of the happiest days of our lives. Please share this letter and our gift of chocolates as a small token of our appreciation with all Riverhouse staff.

Our banquet was a HUGE success. You, Matt and your staff were wonderful and the food was absolutely phenomenal! There were so many comments throughout the evening about how pleased everyone was with everything.

Also, holding our Banquet on a Friday versus the traditional Saturday was discussed and we believe that this may be our new night. It was really nice to have the whole weekend available this way.

There is no doubt in our minds that we would like to book The Riverhouse for our 2010 Annual Banquet on March 19, 2010 and I am looking forward to filling out your evaluation form.

During our daughter’s wedding on July 4, 2008, Bethany Borovicka and Sid Chanthavisouk, and for days since, the compliments went like this – outstanding, amazing, beautiful, best meal ever, such wonderful service, outstanding wait staff, what a beautiful place, and such attention to detail.  We couldn’t have been more pleased with Bethany and Sid’s wedding, and the compliments say it all.

From the moment we walked into The Riverhouse last fall, we knew that was where we wanted to hold our daughter’s wedding.  The facility is simply beautiful and elegant, but the service is truly outstanding.

Libby – Thank you for guiding us through the paperwork and payment process.  You were always available or immediately returned any phone messages, and you were so helpful in making sure we submitted all the necessary information that would make the wedding go smoothly.  Your cheerful personality helped make the bill-paying process easier!

Robin – Thank you for treating us like Royalty.  My husband still gets a smile when he talks about you rushing over to offer him Rain Forest Nut coffee as he tried to get a waiter to pour him a cup on the run.  You made sure every moment of the day was perfect.  The ceremony (without rain as you promised) was beautiful on the patio, and as I looked through pictures, I spotted you straightening the train of Bethany’s dress as she started down the aisle.  Perfect!  Thank you!  You had answers for everything before there were questions; every table was beautifully arranged; you guided us through the day so we didn’t have to think and made it easy for us to enjoy the day to the fullest.

Thank you to the wait staff for the professional service throughout the day.  As we watched from the bridal suite as they polished every dish, glass, and piece of silver, we knew we had chosen the best.  There were many compliments to the wait staff.

When friends and co-workers ask where the wedding was held, we proudly say, “The Riverhouse in Haddam, the most beautiful wedding venue we’ve ever seen.”

Thank you everyone for making our daughter’s wedding a day that everyone is talking about.

Dear Libby,

I can’t tell you how many compliments we received on the reception. Everyone we talked to said the place was beautiful and the food was wonderful. As food was one of our primary concerns, I was thrilled that we received unsolicited compliments from many of our guests – including – “that was the best food I’ve ever tasted at a wedding” and “I was so stuffed but I still went back for more it was so good” and “that was the best wedding I’ve been to in my life.” I have to say, I could assume that people are just being kind, but if they were only being kind I don’t think they’d be gushing about what a wonderful time they had (like I’m gushing now) – they’d simply say “it was great” and be done with it. The amount and type of compliments we’ve received have been above and beyond your generic “thanks, we had a great time.” Everything from the professionalism of the staff to the layout of the food to the small decorative details to the taste of the food… it was all wonderful. I myself had some hot hors d oeuvres, a bit of soup, salad, and a few bites of tenderloin and tuna. What I did eat was delicious. But, as everyone told me it would, the evening flew by.

We had a wonderful time and that was largely due to the coordination and professionalism of the Riverhouse staff and I can’t tell you what it meant to us to know that our day seemed to be as important to you as it was to us.

I’m looking forward to getting the pictures back and will definitely send a few along to you – I’m sure the ones on the staircase are going to look great!

I am writing to you to express my deep sense of appreciation for all of the hard work you did to create such a spectacular setting for the Weiselfish-Connell wedding on June 22, 2007 at The Riverhouse at Goodspeed Station.  In addition, I would like you to know what an extraordinary experience it was for me personally and professionally to collaborate with such a wonderful team of people!

I can well imagine that building a venue such as The Riverhouse is not without its stresses, both large and small, and yet, you never let this interfere with your exemplary service. Whether presented with unusual dietary restrictions (gluten, sugar, and alcohol-free menu for 300 guests), or inclement weather conditions on the day of the event, you met every request & situation with flexibility & grace.

I think what was most striking to me was the consistently open and receptive way in which you handled any questions or concerns brought to your attention by me or other members of the wedding party.  Your approachable and responsive manner stands out as a mark of true professionalism.

All in all, it was truly an honor and a pleasure to work with such a dedicated group of people.  I would consider fortunate any bride and groom who choose the The Riverhouse at Goodspeed Station as the setting for their dream day!

We wanted to send you a written note to again tell you how much we enjoyed Kylee’s wedding .

Your calm, reassuring manner was so refreshing and I knew everything would come together perfectly.

Everyone said it was not only the best wedding they ever attended but also the best wedding food ever! The stuffed sole was so delicious as was everything else. The ice sculptures were fabulous – angle martinis were yummy and the chocolate fountain was a huge success! The wait staff was expedious, polite and accommodating.

You can be sure you’ll be getting many referrals from all our guests. It’s a beautiful facility – the only thing lacking is a small motel situated on the lower acreage with views of the river. Jim and his partners would hit a huge home run with overnight accommodations. It would be a one-stop shop!

I mostly will miss you and our personal emails. I promise I won’t lose touch with you. I’ll call you when we get back from NH.

Just a short note to let you know how much we enjoyed our happy hour at your establishment. The food was phenomenal, the service exceptional, and the location exquisite. All day I have been hearing people talk of the great food, the wonderful location and the friendly staff. My boss & I were chatting and she mentioned how friendly but unobtrusive the wait staff was. The bartender was friendly from all accounts and vary accommodating when asked to make a variety of mixed drinks. When time was taken by leadership to commend the teams, your staff quickly turned off the music so as all could hear. We will keep your establishment in our rolodexes for future use. We want to thank you and Robin for all you did to provide us with a spectacular wedding event. While we always trusted that you and your staff would deliver a very high caliber of service, we must say that The Riverhouse exceeded our expectations! The food was just wonderful. It was not only flavorful, but was served at just the right temperature and was beautifully presented.

The service reflected the utmost in professionalism. Whenever we or a guest needed something, it seemed there was always a cheerful person at the ready to attend to that need. When nothing was needed, the servers seemed to disappear. Now, that’s a neat trick to be able to pull off! What is particularly telling is the fact that many of our guests approached us during the cocktail hour and reception to tell us how impressed they were with the venue, the quality and presentation of the food, and the service. Even more significant is the fact that many of these guests were wedding-reception “veterans” who are not so easily impressed.
